Purpose
This is a template to generate links from biographical articles to the catalogue of the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) in London, England.
It allows a link to the NPG's list of portraits of that person.
Usage
{{NPG name | id= |name= }}
e.g.
{{NPG name | id=01294 |name=Charles Dickens }}
produces: Portraits of Charles Dickens at the National Portrait Gallery, London
Finding the ID
- Go to npg.org.uk and search for the person you want
- Click on the correct link to go to the details of a picture of the person you want. Be sure you are getting the right person
- Below the picture and its details, the sitter and the artist should both be listed.
- Click on the link for the sitter
- The page URL should look like http://www.npg.org.uk/live/search/person.asp?LinkID=mp#######, where "#######" indicates a number.
- Copy ONLY that number (be sure to remove the "mp" and to keep all the zeros)
- Add to the external links section the text:
- {{npg name|id=#######|name=Name}}
- where "#######" is the number you've copied, and "Name" is the person's name
Example
- Searching for "Harold Wilson", you will reach this page: http://www.npg.org.uk/live/search/portList.asp?search=sp&sText=Harold+Wilson
- Click on the link for the first picture
- Below the thumbnail picture, you will see the hyperlinked text:
- Sitter: (James) Harold Wilson, Baron Wilson of Rievaulx (1916-1995), Prime Minister.
- Click on the link
- From the URL of the page displayed,
- Copy "04868" and then write:
- {{npg name|id=04868|name=Harold Wilson}}
The result is Portraits of Harold Wilson at the National Portrait Gallery, London
Note that, since this will almost certainly go on the external link section, you should add a * before the template text to include it as a list item.
