- The Great Indian Traffic Scenes
The name looks like a pun. The aim is not to ridicule ourselves. Then why this name? Because I think the fuzzy logic in traffic is something which we will be able to implement. If you watch certain traffic snarls you can observe that the knot gets entangled by itself. Its a self working phenomena.
These videos and photos are put up not to ridicule and have merriment of the Indian traffic scenarios.
People are dying by scores, everyday.
A sense of righteous use of the road seems to be lacking amongst every one be it the educated or the uneducated; the learned and the ignorant; the affluent as well as the downtrodden.
But the life is precious to all isn't it? And the road belongs to everyone.
Governments is lax as it is always in all things.
Strict enforcements of rules and pan societal forceful education on road usage and driving would even change the scene overnight.
In a world where everyone is craving for previleges and exemptions law cannot be enforced isn't it?
The politician when stopped by the police for not wearing the helmet will immediately say what functionary of which party he is so that the policeman gives a salute instead of the fine chit.
The advocates and the 'press' will call forward the attention to the stickers stuck on their vehicles.
Almost all the political parties have huge youth wings. If they volunteer themselves to take initiatives the scenario might change rapidly. But they are all busy with printing flux boards with their photos.
Now without any aids and help why does not the society correct itself? Ignorance is my answer.
Because we study only to get marks and admissions we are still the same old cave man on the roads albiet on expensive vehicles; the only difference.
Often I feel that I am watching a circus where elephants, bears, dogs etc. are driving on the roads.
Unless one is told that when you have two lanes you should leave the outer lane free for overtaking vehicles, one would not know. The resistance to amend ones wrong ways even after being told is another thing altogether.
But let us take a chance and show to people what is right and what is wrong. Maybe only a miniscule percent would change thus, but let us aim for that.
My basic premises are the following;
If you be a model driver, there will be many who will look at you and learn. Theoretically at least, when the majority have turned to law abiding drivers, the frugal minority will not dare to stick their nose out. He will be forced to comply.
The baseline while driving should be to let the others pass first.
Follow simple and basic rules (not really rules but practises). Small trickles may contribute a huge change.
Ex - not to use horns unnecessarily
When caught in a traffic snarls, to wait behind a vehicle patiently rather heading straight for the front through the opposite lane.
When you are parking, think of economy, are you causing any difficulty to the next driver.
You are driving slow. Are you blocking others.
You want to ask your way. Are you making ten others wait impatiently while you are at it?
I propose the following three methods to bring about this change.
Give small tips which you think will contribute to good and safe driving.
Show small videos of driving and road use abuse.
Contribute photos of traffic violations.
While uploading videos and photos add a line of caption saying what information are you passing. What is good or bad?
