എം കൃഷ്ണന്‍ നായര്‍: ഫൂക്കോയുടെ പെന്‍ഡുലം ഫ്രഞ്ച് ഭൗതിക ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞന്‍ ഷാങ്ങ് ബര്‍നാര്‍ ലേയോങ്ങ് ഫൂക്കോ (Jean Bernard, Leon Foucault, 1819–1869) 1851-ല്‍ രണ്ടടി വ്യാസവും 62 പൗണ്ട് ഭാരവുമുള്ള ഒരു ഇരുമ്പു ഗോളം 200 അടി നീളമുള്ള ഉരുക്കു കമ്പിയുടെ അറ്റത്തു കെട്ടി ഒരു വലിയ പള്ളിയില്‍ തൂക്കി. ഈ പെന്‍ഡുലത്തിന്റെ അറ്റത്ത് ഒരാണിയുണ്ട്. ഭൂമിയില്‍ തൊടാതെയാണ് അതിന്റെ സ്ഥിതിയെങ്കിലും താഴെ വിതറിയ മണലില്‍ അത് അടയാളം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തും. പെന്‍ഡുലം ഒരു തലത്തില്‍ത്തന്നെ ചലനം കൊള്ളും. പക്ഷേ ഭൂമി കറങ്ങുന്നതു കൊണ്ട് അതിന്റെ അഭിവിന്യാസത്തിന് (Orientation) മാറ്റം വരും. പെന്‍ഡുലം വടക്കേ ധ്രുവത്തിലായിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍ ഇരുപത്തിനാലു മണിക്കൂറില്‍ ഒരു വൃത്തമാരചിച്ച് അതിന്റെ തലത്തിനു മാറ്റം വരുത്തിയെന്നു തോന്നുമായിരുന്നു. പാരീസിന്റെ ലാറ്റിറ്റ്യൂഡില്‍ (latitude — ഭൂമദ്ധ്യരേഖയില്‍ നിന്നു തെക്കോട്ടു വടക്കോട്ടുമുള്ള ദൂരം ഡിഗ്രിയായി) അത് 31 മണിക്കൂറും 47 മിനിറ്റും കൊണ്ട് മാറും (അസിമോവിനോടു കടപ്പാടുണ്ട് ഈ വിവരണത്തിന്). പാരീസില്‍ ഇന്നുമുള്ള ഈ പെന്‍ഡുലത്തെ അവലംബിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് ചിന്തകളും ദാര്‍ശനികനും സാഹിത്യകാരനുമായ ഉമ്പര്‍ടോ എകോ എഴുതിയ അന്യാദൃശമായ നോവലാണ് ‘ഫൂക്കോയുടെ പെന്‍ഡുലം’ (Foucault’s Pendulum). The Name of the Rose എന്ന നോവലിന്റെ രചനയോടു കൂടി മഹായശസ്കനായിത്തീര്‍ന്ന ഈ ഇറ്റാലിയന്‍ സാഹിത്യകാരന്റെ ഈ പുതിയ നോവലില്‍ മനുഷ്യ ധിക്ഷണയ്ക്ക് എത്രത്തോളം ഉയരാമെന്നതിനു നിദര്‍ശകമാണ്.

ഈ പെന്‍ഡുലത്തോടു മൂന്നുപേര്‍ ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടുന്നതിന്റെ ഫലമായ ദുരന്തമായ നോവലിന്റെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട വിഷയം. മിലാനിലെ ഒരു പ്രസാധക സംഘത്തിലെ അംഗങ്ങളാണ് ഡിയോടല്ലവിയും ബെല്‍ബോയും കസോബെന്നും. ഒരു രഹസ്യ ഭൂപടം ഫൂക്കോയുടെ പെന്‍ഡുലത്തിന്റെ താഴെ വച്ചാല്‍ പ്രാചീന കാലത്ത് നൈറ്റ്സ് ടെംപ്ളര്‍സ് സങ്കല്പിച്ച രഹസ്യമെന്തെന്നു കണ്ടുപിടിക്കാമെന്ന് ആ മൂന്നു പേരും വിചാരിച്ചു. കുരിശു യുദ്ധങ്ങള്‍ നടക്കുന്ന കാലത്താണ് ഈ സംഘടന — Knights Templars — രൂപീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടത്. തീര്‍ത്ഥാടകരെ സംരക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ടി രൂപം കൊണ്ട അതിനു ആദ്യകാലത്ത് സൈനിക പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങളാണ് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. എസ്റ്റേറ്റുകളും മറ്റു സമ്പത്തുകളും സമ്മാനങ്ങളായി നേടിയ ഈ സംഘം ക്രമേണ പ്രബലമായിത്തീര്‍ന്നു. ജറൂസലമായിരുന്നു അവരുടെ ആസ്ഥാനം. കാലം കഴിഞ്ഞു. ഷാക്ക് ദ മൊലേ (Jacques de Molay, 1243–1314) ആ സംഘടനയുടെ അധീശനായി. ഫ്രാന്‍സിലെ രാജാവായിരുന്ന ഫിലിപ്പ് നാലാമന്‍ നൈറ്റ്സ് ടെംപ്ളര്‍സിന്റെ സമ്പത്തിലും ശക്തിയിലും അസൂയാലുവായി. 1307-ല്‍ ഫ്രാന്‍സിലെ എല്ലാ ടെംപ്ലര്‍സിനെയും അദ്ദേഹം അറസ്റ്റു ചെയ്തു ഇന്‍ക്വിസിഷന്‍ കോടതിയുടെ മുന്‍പില്‍ കൊണ്ടുവന്നു. വിസ്താരത്തിനു ശേഷം മൊലേയെയും മറ്റു ടെംപ്ലര്‍സിനെയും കുറ്റിയില്‍ കെട്ടി എരിച്ചു കൊന്നു. സ്വവര്‍ഗ്ഗാനുരാഗമാണ് രാജാവ് അവരില്‍ അയഥാര്‍ത്ഥമായി ആരോപിച്ച കുറ്റം. പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിന്റെ അയസ്കാന്ത പ്രവാഹങ്ങലെ നിയന്ത്രിച്ച് ലോകത്തെ കീഴടക്കാനുള്ള ഒരു പദ്ധതി ടെംപ്ലര്‍സിന് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു പോലും. ഭൂപടം ഫൂക്കോയുടെ പെന്‍ഡുലത്തിന്റെ താഴെ വച്ച് ആ പദ്ധതി മനസ്സിലാക്കാനായിരുന്നു മൂന്ന് പേരുടെയും യത്നം. അപ്പോഴേക്കും ചില മതഭ്രാന്തന്മാര്‍ അവരെ സമീപിക്കുന്നു. ടെംപ്ലര്‍സിന്റെ രഹസ്യമറിയാനായി. അതറിയിച്ചില്ലെങ്കില്‍ അവരെ മൂന്നു പേരെയും കൊന്നുകളയുമെന്നും അവര്‍ ഭീഷണി മുഴക്കി. The acclaimed novelist and shortstory writer, E Harikumar has given consent to Sayahna to republish all his works under CC-BY-NC. The digitizing work is progressing rapidly and the books will soon appear in this site soon.

Chandu Menon
For several decades, Keralites have been reading an edited version of Indulekha, the first Malayalam novel published in 1889, according to a new finding by literary critics, Dr Rajasekharan and Dr Venugopalan. The novel which made a strong advocacy for women's empowerment was mercilessly edited and those who published the book in later years chopped off many such portions. The last chapter (chapter 20) was the most edited one. The critics found the original version of the novel from the British Library in London after several years of search.

Sayahna has published the revised digital version of the novel with all the chopped off portions in chapter 20 reinstated. The newly added portions have a different color to distinguish the same easily. The previous version of the chapter is also kept as an appendix.

All the articles of late Sanjayan (M.R. Nair), the versatile humourist considered to be the greatest writer in that genre after the famed Kunchan Nambiar, are getting ready for release in this Wiki. A few articles have already been released and can be seen here.

All the works of Prof M Krishna Nair comprising of 24 books, his famed weekly literary column that uninterruptedly spanned a period of 36 years and other articles on literary criticism that appeared in various periodicals will be published by Sayahna under the terms of Creative Commons Attribution-Non-commercial 4.0. Mrs J Vijayamma, wife of the late writer had kindly consented for the same, a kind act which the entire Malayalam speaking population would be ever thankful for.

Experimental page of an article namely, Cross-Connections, written by renowned mathematician, Prof. KSS Nambooripad is available for readers to get a grip of how mathematics can be rendered in Mediawiki. MathJax is the principal engine that renders mathematical formulae and equations from sources that are marked up in $T e X$ . This is to augment ourselves for the release of his larger volume of research work on Semigroup and Biordered Set.
